Formula and assumptions
Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60. Therefore 7:30 equals 7.5, not 7.30.

Use the formula
The hours to decimal calculator applies decimal hours = total minutes divided by 60. For 7:30, total minutes are 7 × 60 + 30, or 450. Then 450 ÷ 60 = 7.50.
For 6:05, total minutes are 365. Dividing 365 by 60 gives 6.0833 repeating, which the display rounds to two decimal places as 6.08.
Keep duration and decimal notation separate
A colon means hours and minutes. A period means a decimal value. The conversion tool accepts both, but the meanings are different and should not be swapped.

Check decimal-time entries
Use the hours to decimal calculator when a form asks for decimal hours rather than a clock duration. Start by converting all hours to minutes. For 4:20, the total is 260 minutes. Dividing 260 by 60 gives 4.3333 repeating, shown as 4.33. The decimal is a number of hours, not a clock display.
A reliable check is to multiply the decimal back by 60 before final rounding. For 7.50, 7.50 × 60 is 450 minutes, or 7:30. The conversion tool makes this paired check visible. Follow the receiving system's rounding rule if it requires more or fewer decimal places.
Use enough precision for the destination
Two decimal places are convenient for many worksheets, but they are still a rounded display. Eleven minutes is 0.1833 repeating hours, shown as 0.18. If several short entries must be added, total the original minutes first and convert once. Adding many separately rounded decimals can move the final value by a few hundredths.
When converting back, multiply the decimal portion by 60. For 4.75, the whole-number part is four hours and 0.75 × 60 is 45 minutes. For 4.10, the decimal portion represents six minutes, not ten minutes. This reverse check is useful when a copied payroll value looks like a clock time.
